Word document help

In response to requests from teachers we publish some materials as Word documents, so you can easily use the content on screen, which is particularly helpful for some types of forms.

Word documents on our website can be opened with Microsoft Word. However, there are free alternatives such as OpenOffice or Microsoft Word Viewer which lets you view and print the documents on a computer that does not have Microsoft Word installed.

Word files may not look the same on every computer: the layout, page numbering, fonts etc may not be reproduced exactly, depending on the set up of your computer or printer. For this reason, we generally supply PDFs of the same document.

Support

Unfortunately, we can't offer support for your use of third-party software: installing and using it is your responsibility, however, if you have difficulties try the following.

  1. Try saving the file, then opening it again in Microsoft Word or equivalent software, rather than viewing it in your browser. On a PC this is usually done by right clicking on the link and choosing 'Save Target As ...'
  2. Some of these documents are large files that might take a few minutes to download. You may not be able to print the document before the download is finished.
  3. If a document is not properly cached (saved) by your browser then you will have repeated problems trying to open it. You may find that clearing your cache will enable you to open it.
