The 20 young people selected to take part in Unlocking Potential met their mentors for the first time at a national team event in central London on 11 May.
These young people were selected from across the country to work over the next six months with sports mentors on projects to improve their local community. These mentors include Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmer Adam Whitehead; Judo Olympian Chloe Cowen; and Jenna Downing, a world champion extreme inline skater.
The programme, run with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, helps unlock the potential of young people aged 14-19 who have shown commitment and integrity in the face of challenging personal circumstances. The Unlocking Potential programme will help its 20 young participants run a social action project in their local community – which could be anything from tackling anti-social behaviour to improving recycling opportunities. Each participant will be supported throughout by their sports mentor and the teacher who nominated them.
Sufian Sadiq, a teacher at Luton Sixth Form College, said: The young person we have nominated for this programme is an inspiration to everyone around him, but he needs inspiration, too. We are delighted that this programme will give him the opportunity to be mentored and we hope that it will give him the skills to achieve his goals.
