The work of an examiner or moderator is responsible and demanding but also rewarding and must be carried out within a tight timetable.
The marking/moderating normally takes place over a period of 3–4 weeks during the relevant examination period. The exact dates, and the number of scripts or samples of coursework to be marked, vary between subjects.
To apply, you should normally have:
| You will have to... | So you will need to... |
| Complete standardisation either online or at a meeting (usually within a week of the exam date) | Check that you're available at that time |
| Complete all your marking (usually within 21 days) | Make sure you have free evenings/ weekends during the marking period Plan your work – set a target to mark a certain number of scripts per day and keep to it Organise yourself and your workspace |
| Appreciate that marking is intensive and isolating for a short period | Be prepared for this and keep in touch with your Team Leader Tell your family and friends what it will be like in advance |
