Summary

This specification is designed to encourage candidates to:

  • develop and sustain their enjoyment of, and interest in, law
  • develop knowledge and understanding of selected areas of law
  • gain an understanding of legal method and reasoning
  • develop techniques of logical reasoning and analytical skills and solve problems by applying legal rules
  • develop the ability to communicate legal arguments and conclusions, referring to legal authority as appropriate.

AS outline

At AS, candidates develop a knowledge and understanding of the legal system and an ability to evaluate its operation and performance. The specification introduces substantive law and requires simple application of aspects of criminal law and civil law (either tort or contract):

  • Unit 1: Law Making and the Legal System
  • Unit 2: The Concept of Liability.

A2 Outline

At A2, the specification further develops knowledge of the legal system and of substantive law through criminal law and/or civil law. Evaluation of the concepts of law continues to be developed at this level of study.

  • Unit 3: Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) or Contract Law
  • Unit 4: Criminal Law (Offences against Property) or Tort, AND Concepts of Law.
