This specification is designed to:
- ensure continuity with the former 6-unit Specification A
- provide a coherent development from AS with its focus on language in its personal and immediate contexts to A2, which places language in its wider social, historical and global contexts
- help learners develop their writing skills in both AS and A2 units.
AS outline
AS learners:
- explore language production and variation through the mutually illuminating activities of writing in different forms and textual analysis
- have the opportunity to explore creative and transactional forms of writing
- develop understanding of how language creates meaning in written, spoken and electronic modes
- gain valuable insights into the language development of children
- are taught the importance of cultural sensitivity in language.
The AS specification has 2 units:
- Unit 1: Seeing through Language
- Unit 2: Representation and Language.
A2 outline
A2 learners explore:
- how the English language has changed since 1600 and is changing today
- how English varies globally, regionally and socially
- cultural debates about the nature and significance of language
- how to carry out language research on topics of their own choice
The A2 specification has 2 Units:
- Unit 3: Language Explorations
- Unit 4: Language Investigations and Interventions.
