Summary

This specification has been designed to:

  • offer a wide choice of topics in the areas of archaeology, architecture, art, history and politics, literature and philosophy
  • provide teachers with the flexibility to design a course which reflects their own interests and those of their candidates
  • complement many other popular A levels, including Art, Drama and Theatre Studies, English Literature, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, and Philosophy.

This specification is designed to encourage candidates to:

  • develop the critical and evaluative skills which will enable them to go on to Higher Education to study a wide range of courses
  • draw on their experiences at GCSE as well as offering a meaningful foundation for the study of classical culture beyond A-level
  • play to their strengths and deepen their enjoyment by offering a great deal of choice within its parameters.

AS outline

At AS, candidates study two significant aspects of the classical world from a choice of topics in the areas of architecture, art, history and politics, and literature. They study primary classical sources, including texts in translation or physical evidence. They choose one topic from the list of groups in the specification:

  • Unit 1: An introduction to an aspect of Classical Civilisation 1
  • Unit 2: An introduction to an aspect of Classical Civilisation 2.

A2 outline

At A2, candidates study two further significant aspects of the classical world. Areas of study now include archaeology and philosophy. An understanding of the links between different central elements of study is expected, and all topics encourage candidates to a greater understanding of the cultural, religious, social and political values of the classical world. Candidates study one topic from the list of groups in the specification:

  • Unit 3: A study of an aspect of Classical Civilisation 1
  • Unit 4: A study of an aspect of Classical Civilisation 2.

For a full breakdown of the unit topics and assessment requirements, see the specification.
