A-level Government and Politics

Summary

This specification is designed to encourage candidates to:

  • develop their critical thinking skills and the ability to interpret, evaluate and comment
  • develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes
  • acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom, and how these may differ from those of other political systems
  • acquire knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual
  • develop an interest in and engagement with contemporary politics.

AS outline

At AS, candidates will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the political system of the UK. The specification concentrates on People, Participation and Politics as well as Governing Modern Britain, retaining much of the content from the old specification:

  • Unit 1 (GOVP1): People, Politics and Participation
  • Unit 2 (GOVP2): Governing Modern Britain.

A2 outline

At A2, the popular options from the old specification are retained, including US Politics, US Government and Ideologies, as well as issues such as Politics and Power.

New options have also been introduced, including Political Issues, providing further choice for teachers. The introduction of these options has been designed to allow teachers to follow specific routes at A2, if required.

Alternatively, teachers may not wish to specialise and have the flexibility to choose the options which are of greatest interest:

  • Unit 3: The Politics of the USA (GOV3A) or Ideologies (GOV3B)
  • Unit 4: The Government of the USA (GOV4A) or Political Issues: Ideologies in Action (GOV4B).

For a full breakdown of the unit topics and assessment requirements, see the specification.
