Course structure and assessment

AS examinations

Our AS builds on the likely linguistic level of students newly qualified in GCSE Bengali.

Unit 1: Reading and Writing

  • Written paper, 2 hours 30 min
  • 100 marks: 100% of AS, 50% of A-level total mark
  • Reading comprehension, translation into English and writing in Bengali
  • Available – June only

A2 examinations

The translation task is a useful tool for further study as well as a test of grammatical knowledge. For the essays, students study two topics of their choice from a range of literary and non-literary topics.

Unit 2: Reading and Writing

  • Written paper, 3 hours
  • 100 marks: 50% of A-level total mark
  • Reading comprehension, translation into Bengali and two essays on topics or texts in Bengali
  • Available – June only
