AS examinations
Topics for study are in the following categories:
- media
- popular culture
- healthy living/lifestyle
- family/relationships.
Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing
- Written paper, 2 hours
- 110 marks: 70% of AS, 35% of A-level total mark
- Students must:
- answer questions on 5 min of heard material
- answer questions on selection of written texts
- respond in writing to one of three AS topic-based questions.
- Available – January and June
Unit 2: Speaking Test
- 35 min (inc 20 min preparation)
- 50 marks: 30% of AS, 15% of A-level total mark
- Students must:
- prepare and discuss AS topic from randomly selected stimulus cards
- converse on three of the four AS topics.
- Available – January and June
A2 examinations
Topics for study are in the following categories:
- environment
- the multicultural society
- contemporary social issues
- cultural topics (five options).
Unit 3: Listening, Reading and Writing
- Written paper, 2 ½ hours
- 110 marks: 35% of A-level total mark
- Students must:
- answer questions on 6 min of heard material
- answer questions on selection of written texts
- respond in writing on one of 10 cultural topic-based questions.

Unit 4: Speaking Test
- 35 min (inc 20 min preparation)
- 50 marks: 15% of A-level total mark
- Students must:
- defend a point of view on one A2 topic from two randomly selected stimulus cards
- converse on two cultural topics of their choice.
