Summary

This specification is designed to encourage candidates to:

  • sustain and develop their interest in, and engagement with, science
  • take an informed interest in media reports about issues and events involving science and technology
  • develop and be able to express an informed, personal point of view on issues concerning science and technology
  • make use of their understanding of science and technology in everyday contexts and in making decisions about everyday lifestyle choices.

AS Outline

Built upon knowledge familiar to candidates from science at GCSE, this specification emphasises understanding the broad principles and interconnected frameworks of ideas that can be applied to understanding issues:

  • Unit 1: Exploring Issues
  • Unit 2: Reading and Research.

A2 Outline

At A2, this specification will further develop knowledge about how science works. Candidates will be given the opportunity to demonstrate and apply through reasoned debate their grasp of the broad principles and frameworks of ideas within the field of contemporary science and technology:

  • Unit 3: A2 Exploring key scientific issues
  • Unit 4: Case Study.
